Rengetsu (1791-1875), the popular Kyoto-born poetess, was originally named Nobu. She was adopted by Otagaki Teruhisa soon after her birth. She married twice but was bereaved twice, and since her four sons all died young, she joined a nunnery headed by Gesshin of Jinko-In Temple and was given the Buddhist name of Rengetsu. Later she embarked on a pottery-making business, living in various parts of Kyoto. She wrote her own waka poems on the pottery she created, which soon became sought-after crafts, with the appropriate name of \u201cRengetsu Pottery.\u201d Also an excellent poet, Rengetsu studied waka writing under Ueda Akinari (1734-1809) and Kagawa Kageki (1768-1843), deeply attractedto the styles of Ozawa Roan (1723-1801). The exhibited poem is from Rengetsu\u2019s private poetry book Ama-no Karumo. Both fine examples of Rengetsu\u2019s artistry, they were written in the poet\u2019s old age, at age 81.
