"],"en":["Priest Nichiyin (1619-92), belonging to the Nichiren Sect of Buddhism during the Edo Period, was actually the son of Hon-ami Kosa (1578-1637), and thus the grandson of Hon-ami Koetsu (1558-1637), the noted multi-talented artist and calligrapher. He became a monk at Honmanji Temple in Kyoto at age 8 and trained under Priest Nissen (1587-1648) of Kuonji Temple. Afterward, he served at various Nichiren temples, including Honpoji and Hokekyoji, until appointed the 24th bishop of Myokakuji Temple in Kyoto. Known as a man of high virtues, Nichiyin came to be regarded with special respect among Nichiren Buddhists, and formed a faction that later played an important role. His calligraphic style resembles that of Koetsu, so closely, in fact, that one cannot readily tell their brushworks apart. Though the exact identity of the addressee is not known, he was probably Goto Teijo (1603-73), the ninth head of the Goto family, in charge of administering the mintage of coins. At the beginning of this letter, Priest Nichiyin tells him that he has finished writing the commissioned work (perhaps the \u201cOdaimoku\u201d or the \u201cMyoho renge kyo\u201d chant) and, as the man is planning a trip to Edo, also asks him to pack a sword for Hon-ami Koshin (identity unknown) with his baggage. Nichiyin wrote this letter at a relatively young age, while serving as the 18th bishop of Honpoji and before becoming the 35th bishop of Hokekyoji and 24th bishop of Myokakuji. The brushwork is extremely similar to that of Koetsu, and had it not been for Nichiyin\u2019s signature, one would mistake the work for his grandfather\u2019s.
